Chicago (A)'s Gene Brabender had a terrific August, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He started 6 games in August, going 4-1 and compiling an ERA of 1.20 in 52.2 innings. Gene fanned 33 hitters. Gene fired two shutouts! His ERA of 2.08 helped him to a 14-10 record this year. He struck out 178 and walked 39 in 233.2 innings. Gene has pitched 4 shutouts and 17 complete games. Don Sutton pitched like a legend in August, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 1.63 helped him to a 4-0 record in August. Ron Blomberg of Pittsburgh wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He hit .309 with 26 RBI and slugged .702 in 94 at bats. Ron is hitting .260 this year, with 118 hits in 454 at bats. He has driven in 91 runs, slugging .513. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Tuesday 8/30/1977: Huge blow for St. Louis' Bosman, career over
ST. LOUIS - It was one of baseball saddest days. St. Louis' right-hander Dick Bosman fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against San Francisco on Tuesday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Mike Easler, then suddenly collapsed. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 6.93 helped him to a 2-12 record this year. He struck out 36 and walked 67 in 115.2 innings. His career featured a record of 37-73 with an ERA of 5.24. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Tuesday 8/30/1977: Steve Hargan pitches 2-hit shutout against Montreal
MONTREAL - Montreal's offense is struggling, and Chicago (N)'s Steve Hargan didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 3rd shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Hargan (13-11) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 71 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' The hitting star for Chicago (N) was first baseman Cecil Cooper, he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, hitting 2 doubles, with three runs scored. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 8/29/1977: Cleveland's Molitor wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Cleveland's Paul Molitor, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .588 and hit .500, while driving in 12 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. New York (N)'s catcher Joe Torre had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .577 with 10 RBI and slugged .846 in 26 at bats.
Friday 8/26/1977: Mike Corkins pitches his 6th shutout of the season
MONTREAL - Pittsburgh's right-hander Mike Corkins is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just one hit. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Corkins (19-9) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 105 pitches. Pittsburgh's leftfielder Lee May finished 3 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Corkins. Pittsburgh improved its record to 81-46, scoring 3 runs on 8 hits.
Friday 8/26/1977: Mickey Lolich shuts out Texas on 2 hits
TEXAS - Mickey Lolich had some fun again. Texas hitters did not. California's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 30 career shutouts in 460 games started. Lolich (19-5) struck out 6 and walked 3, throwing 68 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Bobby Bonds helped Lolich at the plate, he got 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, and collecting 2 RBI. California improved its record to 82-45, scoring 4 runs on 11 hits.
Thursday 8/25/1977: Chicago (N)'s Ron Santo gets milestone hit
ST. LOUIS - Chicago (N)'s third baseman Ron Santo joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 1st inning, Ron drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1976 where he hit .288 with 25 homeruns and 92 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!'
