Monday 9/19/1977: Seattle has no chance in a 2-hitter by Fred Newman
SEATTLE - Texas' right-hander Fred Newman is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Newman (10-8) struck out 1 and issued 3 BB, throwing 64 of 108 pitches for strikes. Texas' third baseman Phil Garner went 3 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Newman. Texas improved its record to 72-78, scoring 4 runs on 16 hits.
Monday 9/19/1977: Jackson (NYA) and Lopez (LAN) win P.O.W. award
Reggie Jackson wins his 4th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 30 at bats he hit .367 with 5 HR and 15 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Los Angeles (N)'s Marcelino Lopez, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Marcelino went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, while fanning 10 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 9/17/1977: Minnesota's Jeff Burroughs mashes five hits
NEW YORK (A) - Jeff Burroughs is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A 417 foot drive to left field marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Skip Guinn in the 1st inning. A RBI double off Skip Guinn in the 5th inning accounted for his 2nd hit. A two-run double off Gary Ignasiak in the 8th inning accounted for his 4th hit. He collected singles in the 6th and in the 9th . Jeff scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He now has a total of 154 hits this season, accounting for a .296 batting average. The final score of the game was 18-12.
Friday 9/16/1977: Roger Nelson turns in great performance against Cleveland
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Roger Nelson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. Nelson (23-4) fanned 3 and walked none, throwing 106 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Charlie Spikes provided Detroit with the offense Nelson needed as he finished 2 for 2, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 15-0.
