Saturday 10/1/1977: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Andy Messersmith pitched like a legend in September, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 1.69 helped him to a 6-1 record in September. He worked 58.2 innings, striking out 39 hitters while walking 23. Andy also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .197 against Andy this season. While posting an ERA of 2.16 he went 20-10 in 38 starts, fanning 186 and walking 133 hitters. Andy has pitched 3 shutouts and 17 complete games. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins! Los Angeles (N)'s Marcelino Lopez had a terrific September, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 36 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 36 innings. His ERA in September was 1.56. Marcelino pitched a shutout as well. Marcelino has a record of 24-10 this season, with an ERA of 2.47. In 306 Innings he was able to strike out 208 batters. Marcelino has pitched 4 shutouts and 13 complete games. Saturday 10/1/1977: Batter of the Month award winners announced
Baltimore's leftfielder Gary Matthews Sr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Gary was on fire, hitting .323 with 13 homeruns and 26 RBI. Gary has gone 180 for 560 (.321) this season, hitting 50 taters and driving in 165 runs. He has scored 135 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was Pittsburgh's Lee May, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 101 at bats he hit .317 with 9 HR and 23 RBI. May has hit 25 taters this year while batting .281. He adds 36 doubles, along with 87 runs scored.
Tuesday 9/27/1977: Jim Palmer fires 2-hitter against St. Louis
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Jim Palmer is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. St. Louis found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Palmer 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 30th shutouts in his career. Palmer (20-10) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 104 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Pittsburgh's leftfielder Lee May collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, hitting a double, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Palmer. Pittsburgh improved its record to 99-59, scoring 7 runs on 12 hits.
Tuesday 9/27/1977: Dick Lange (CLE) will miss 8 weeks
CLEVELAND - Cleveland is without its ace Dick Lange for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ralph Garr in a game against Minnesota. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Bicep Tendon which will require surgery. This season Lange compiled an ERA of 6.59, going 4-16 in 23 starts. He fanned 90 while giving up 183 hits in 155.2 innings.
Tuesday 9/27/1977: Kansas City's DeMola severely injured
KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's right-hander Don DeMola will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 7th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. In 0 starts this year Don struck out 23 batters in 54 innings of work. His ERA is 3.33, his record 1-1.
Monday 9/26/1977: Minnesota's Burroughs wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Minnesota's Jeff Burroughs this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Jeff was on fire, hitting .579 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. Burroughs has hit for a .307 average this season. He has 52 extra base hits along with 271 total bases, resulting in a .501 slugging percentage. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Diego's Dave Winfield this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. BALTIMORE - Baltimore's season took a blow when Wayne Nordhagen suffered a serious injury in the game against New York (A). He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Nordhagen will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. Baltimore wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Nordhagen had suffered a Dislocated Shoulder. Wayne has gone 122 for 420 (.290) this season, hitting 11 taters and driving in 75 runs. He has scored 55 runs on his own.
