--Boston, MA
The Red Sox are please to announce that they will be expanding seating from their longtime seating capacity of 34,824 seats. The demand for seating is obvious as the Fenway faithful have sold out almost every game for the last 3 years, with ticket prices rising due to the demand. Even with the increase in ticket price, people have been clamoring at the ticket gate long after each sellout has occured. Cy Young winner Bob Reynolds had much to say on the announcement. "We've been playing our hearts out in front of sold out crowds for almost my entire time with the team, and that's a great feeling because I don't know anyone who wouldn't rather have that than pitch in front of a half empty stadium. I can't wait to pitch in front of even more rabid fans each time I step on the mound". Seating will grow from the 34,824 seats to a more rounded 50,000 seats. Fenway officials are also happy to reveal that more seats will in all certainty lower the average ticket price, allowing even more fans to experience the charm and history of one of the oldest ballparks in the game. Along with this announcement, the Red Sox are happy to announce that these seats will be available starting opening day of 1979, as the construction will take place during the 78-79 offseason.
The new seating will add a second and third deck all around the concourse, as shown here, as well as add seats on the green monster!
The team is also pleased to introduce the new acquisitons of SS Greg Riddoch, who will fill the role of IF utility with the club for the forseeable future, and 2B Davey Lopes, who will take 4th OF duty and be a big help for the team against left-handed pitching. On a more impactful note, the team has also acquired OF Sadaharu Oh from the San Francisco Giants via waivers. Management is hopeful that his down year the last couple years was more of a fluke due to moving out of the AL than anything, and that seeing familiar faces he hit so well against more often this year will give him that boost he needs to be a formidable hitter and cap off what should no doubt be a hall of fame worthy career. LF Willie Horton was also brought on this offseason to fill out the DH duties that Red Sox fan favorite Tom Haller occupied for so many years, and with his retirement the team surely needs these new hitters to step up to the plate and help boost this well known pitching juggernaut based team further into the playoffs towards their first World Series win in what would be 50 years. Star hitter and future hall of famer Carl Yastrzemski was quoted as saying "We're excited about all the new additions to the team this year, as fans know that our team has been sitting at the top of the league in most pitching categories for several years now, which may have left not much room in the payroll to get star hitters to compliment them. While this team has generated some wonderful homegrown hitters to help make up for it in players like SS Wade Boggs and 1B Cliff Johnson, having a bonafide star in Sadaharu Oh behind Mike Rogodzinski and I in the lineup should let us see a lot more quality pitches to hit in our at " This team is looking as strong as ever, and the Red Sox are ready to push for the title yet again.
