The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Katsuo Osugi, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Katsuo went 8 for 21 (.381), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 12 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The National League's best player of the week was Philadelphia's Nate Colbert, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 23 at bats he hit .565 with 2 HR and 10 RBI.
Friday 4/22/1978: Nolan Ryan pitches 2-hit shutout against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - California's right-hander Nolan Ryan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Milwaukee on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 19th time he has done it in his career. Ryan (3-0) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 61 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Bobby Bonds provided California with the offense Ryan needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, doubling once, scoring twice and driving in 3 runs. California scored 7 runs on 7 hits.
Thursday 4/21/1978: Mike Rogodzinski (BOS) will miss 9 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's centerfielder Mike Rogodzinski will miss about 9 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 5th inning of the game between Boston and Kansas City. He dove for a drive off the bat of Koichi Tabuchi, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Boston wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Rogodzinski had suffered a Torn Rib Cage Muscle. Rogodzinski has walked 14 times this year and posts a .392 OBP. While batting .250, 15 for 60, he has driven in 7 runs.
Tuesday 4/19/1978: Mike Corkins shuts out San Diego on one hit
SAN DIEGO - Great days are rare. But not for Pittsburgh's right-hander Mike Corkins. San Diego found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. Corkins (4-0) struck out 7 and walked 4, throwing 76 of 134 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Pittsburgh's rightfielder Jim Rice went 3 for 4, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Corkins. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Monday 4/18/1978: Joe L. Morgan collects 2000th hit against Atlanta
ATLANTA - Houston's second baseman Joe L. Morgan was in good mood after the game against Atlanta, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. With two outs in the 9th inning, Joe L. drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 13 years of big league action so far, Joe L. has compiled a batting average of .272, along with 168 homeruns and 767 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.'
