Monday 5/2/1978: Fidrych (CLE) and Jackson (HOU) win P.O.W. award
Cleveland's pitcher Mark Fidrych had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.53 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Mark has a record of 3-2 this season, with an ERA of 4.44. In 48.2 Innings he was able to strike out 32 batters. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Houston's Reggie Jackson this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Jackson helped his team with an average of .583 and 12 RBI in 24 at bats. Reggie managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 6 consecutive games as well! This year Jackson drove in 23 and scored 20 runs while batting .306 with 12 taters. He's 5th in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Sunday 5/1/1978: Brabender and Dilauro receive Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 5th time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Gene Brabender. He had an ERA of just 1.07 in 42 innings of work in which he struck out 22 hitters. His record in April is 4-1. Gene pitched a shutout as well. The best month of April in the National League certainly had Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Jack Dilauro, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 5-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 50.1 innings of work he allowed just 24 hits while striking out 21, compiling an ERA of just 1.07.

The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Charlie Spikes, Detroit's starting leftfielder. Spikes helped his team with an average of .412 and 26 RBI in 97 at bats. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Joe Rudi, Detroit's starting first baseman. Joe was on fire, hitting .350 with 8 homeruns and 24 RBI.
Friday 4/29/1978: Oakland has no chance in a NO-HITTER by David Clyde
OAKLAND - New York (A)'s left-hander David Clyde is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Oakland on no hits. Clyde (3-2) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 64 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' New York (A)'s third baseman Eric Soderholm finished 2 for 4, going deep twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Clyde. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Thursday 4/28/1978: Cecil Upshaw quiets Seattle bats with shutout
TEXAS - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Cecil Upshaw did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Seattle. Upshaw (2-2) struck out none and walked 1, throwing 59 of 91 pitches for strikes. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Kenichi Yazawa helped Upshaw at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. Texas scored 12 runs on 13 hits.
Wednesday 4/27/1978: Dennis Musgraves (TOR) will miss 5 weeks
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Dennis Musgraves suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Kansas City he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Toronto wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Musgraves had suffered a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .305 against Dennis this season. While posting an ERA of 5.23 he went 0-4 in 5 starts, fanning 12 and walking 10 hitters.

TEXAS - Seattle's right-hander Dennis Leonard will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Texas on Monday. Leonard (2-4) fanned 4 and walked 6, throwing 148 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Seattle was centerfielder Jim Nettles, he went 2 for 5, doubling once, scoring two runs. Seattle improved its record to 6-16, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 4/25/1978: Paul Splittorff (TEX) will miss 7 weeks
TEXAS - Texas is without its southpaw Paul Splittorff for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Greg Gross in a game against Seattle. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Paul has a record of 0-0 this season, with an ERA of 4.15. In 8.2 Innings he was able to strike out 4 batters.
