Monday 5/9/1978: Roger Nelson turns in great performance against Chicago (A)
CHICAGO (A) - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Roger Nelson. Chicago (A) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 23rd time he has done it in his career. Nelson (4-4) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 65 of 111 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Davey Johnson provided Detroit with the offense Nelson needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, stroking a double, and driving in 3 runs. Detroit scored 4 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 5/9/1978: Osugi and Peterson win Player of the Week award
Katsuo Osugi from Chicago (A) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 22 at bats he hit .409 with 4 HR and 8 RBI. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! His season numbers are: .272 AVG, 34 hits, one double, no triples and 14 homeruns, along with 32 RBI and 31 runs scored. He had an on base percentage of .524 and hit .500, while driving in 5 runs.
Thursday 5/5/1978: Paul Molitor out for 5 weeks
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's second baseman Paul Molitor will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 3rd inning of the game between Cleveland and Seattle. He fielded a ball off the bat of Rick Dempsey, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Tricep Muscle. Paul has gone 30 for 116 (.259) this season, hitting 2 taters and driving in 14 runs. He has scored 20 runs on his own.
