The O's are off to a hot start and look to maintain their lead in the AL East. However, it will not be easy as the East can boast the top two positions in the latest HOFFBL power rankings. The Orioles know that they have been aided by the consistent manner in which Boston outfielders have been placed on the disabled list but look at the standings and are hopeful that even if their slim lead in the division does not hold up they have a solid chance with a wildcard spot up for grabs.
After one month the O's rank tied for 3rd in average, lead the AL in homeruns hit, are tied with Detroit for runs scored, have a sizable lead in walks taken which translates to an AL leading on base average. GM Jamieson believes that the team has room to improve in the area of strikeouts. "We need to have better at bats on a more consistent basis."
Pitching was significantly targeted during the off season. One month into the season the Orioles are the only team in the AL AND HOFFBL not to give up 80 walks. The O's staff rank 3rd in the AL in strikeouts, 2nd in the East in ERA, and 1st in saves. However, Jamieson says, "It is the number of hits we are giving up on a regular basis that is causing me to lose sleep at night. We need to bring down opponents averages if we are going to maintain the lead we have after the first month."
Obviously it is a long season with a ton of baseball left to play. Boston is going to get healthy, trades will be made, but Baltimore's hopes are high that this can be the year that they return to the playoffs.
