The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Tim McCarver this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 28 at bats he hit .500 with 1 HR and 14 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. His season features a batting average of .333 (53 hits in 159 AB), 15 doubles, 4 triples and 5 homeruns. McCarver collected 41 RBI and 30 runs as well. He's 6th in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Diego's Don Sutton this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Sutton was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 18 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! Don has a record of 5-2 this season, with an ERA of 1.71. Sunday 5/22/1978: Joe Rudi hits for the cycle against Cincinnati
ATLANTA - Joe Rudi is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 1st off Nelson Briles accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Nelson Briles in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. A two-run double off Jerry Augustine in the 4th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from Ron Reed in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 440 feet from home plate in left field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Joe did drive in 5 while scoring 5 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .314. 48 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Joe. Garry Maddox was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 10/7/1977.
Sunday 5/22/1978: Bob Reynolds shuts out Seattle on 2 hits
SEATTLE - Boston's right-hander Bob Reynolds is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 16th time he has done it in his career. Reynolds (9-2) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 71 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Chico Salmon provided Boston with the offense Reynolds needed as he finished 3 for 5, hitting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring two runs with 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 11-0.
Tuesday 5/17/1978: Allen Ripley turns in great performance against Houston
HOUSTON - It was a great day for Philadelphia's right-hander Allen Ripley. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Houston on Tuesday. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Ripley (2-5) struck out 3 and issued 4 BB, throwing 66 of 109 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Philadelphia was shortstop Dave Cash, he went 2 for 5, and driving in 2 runs. Philadelphia improved its record to 21-21, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.

LOS ANGELES (N) - Houston's left-hander Don Gullett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Gullett (6-2) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 98 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Reggie Jackson provided Houston with the offense Gullett needed as he finished 2 for 4, going deep twice, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Houston improved its record to 23-18, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 5/16/1978: J.R. Richard (BOS) will miss 6 weeks
BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's right-hander J.R. Richard will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Minnesota where he left the field in the 6th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 2.42 helped him to a 5-2 record this year. He struck out 70 and walked 16 in 74.1 innings.

Thursday 5/12/1978: Toronto's Earl C. Williams unloads three times
CLEVELAND - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Toronto's catcher Earl C. Williams accomplished that feat in a 14-7 win over Cleveland. In the 1st inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Mike Flanagan. His 2nd shot, off Mike Flanagan in the 3rd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. A pitch from Steve Foucault in the 8th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 408 feet from home plate in left-center. Overall he went 4 for 5, hitting a double, scoring FIVE runs and driving in 9 runs.
