The best month of May in the American League certainly had Detroit's right-hander Lew Krausse Jr., earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 0.73 helped him to a 4-1 record in May. He worked 49 innings, striking out 27 hitters while walking 23. Lew pitched THREE complete game shutouts! This season Krausse Jr. compiled an ERA of 2.28, going 8-3 in 12 starts. Sunday 5/29/1978: Joaquin Andujar pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CHICAGO (N) - It was a great day for St. Louis' right-hander Joaquin Andujar. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Chicago (N) on Sunday. Andujar (5-6) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 77 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' St. Louis' second baseman Dane Iorg collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring twice with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Andujar. St. Louis scored 7 runs on 14 hits.
Sunday 5/29/1978: Texas' Carlton out for 7 weeks
TEXAS - When it rains, it pours. Texas' left-hander Steve Carlton will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston where he left the field in the 4th inning. Carlton was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Shoulder. His ERA of 4.91 helped him to a 3-6 record this year. He struck out 41 and walked 32 in 73.1 innings.

HOUSTON - Houston is without its right-hander Ron Willis for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bake McBride in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. Ron has a record of 1-0 this season, with an ERA of 3.72. In 19.1 Innings he was able to strike out 10 batters.
Thursday 5/26/1978: Garry Maddox nabs five hits against San Francisco
LOS ANGELES (N) - Garry Maddox hits 'em where they ain't. San Francisco certainly agrees as Los Angeles (N)'s centerfielder unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 415 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Les Cain. His 4th hit was a two-run double off Al Raffo in the 5th inning. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 7th inning . Garry did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .263 this season, with 2 HR and 25 RBI. The final score of the game was 15-8.
Wednesday 5/25/1978: It's NO-NO time for Mike Flanagan against Oakland
OAKLAND - Mike Flanagan had some fun again. REAL fun. Oakland hitters did not. Cleveland's lefty fired a no-hitter in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 10 career shutouts in 154 games started. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Flanagan (4-5) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 60 of 103 pitches for strikes. Richie Zisk helped Flanagan at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Cleveland scored 9 runs on 14 hits.
