Tuesday 6/14/1978: Cincinnati's Blue severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's pitcher Vida Blue was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 4th inning of the game between Cincinnati and San Diego. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Blue will miss about 6 weeks. Fractured Cheekbone was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Blue compiled an ERA of 5.98, going 1-6 in 13 starts. He fanned 40 while giving up 92 hits in 84.1 innings.
Monday 6/13/1978: Roger Nelson shuts out Minnesota on 2 hits
MINNESOTA - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Roger Nelson. Minnesota found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 24th time he has done it in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Nelson (10-5) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 118 pitches. Julio Cruz helped Nelson at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 6/13/1978: Messersmith (CHA) and May (PIT) win P.O.W. award
Chicago (A)'s pitcher Andy Messersmith had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Messersmith was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! Andy has a record of 6-4 this season, with an ERA of 2.52. In 118 Innings he was able to strike out 57 batters. He has 7 complete games and 4 shutouts. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Pittsburgh's Lee May this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .429 with 10 RBI and slugged .857 in 28 at bats. His season numbers are: .262 AVG, 59 hits, 17 doubles, 3 triples and 8 longballs, along with 40 RBI and 27 runs scored.
Friday 6/10/1978: Larry Bearnarth NO-HITS Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Detroit's right-hander Larry Bearnarth is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Milwaukee on no hits. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Bearnarth (9-4) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 3. Gary Carter provided Detroit with the offense Bearnarth needed as he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Detroit improved its record to 44-20, scoring 2 runs on 4 hits.

CALIFORNIA - California's third baseman Tony Horton suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Cleveland's Jerry Fosnow. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Horton will probaby miss 9 weeks. Broken Skull was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season numbers are: .254 AVG, 51 hits, 12 doubles, no triples and 6 homeruns, along with 28 RBI and 19 runs scored.
