Monday 7/11/1978: California's Correll wins Player of the Week award
Vic Correll wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Vic went 12 for 24 (.500), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 17 RBI. Vic is hitting .265 this year, with 70 hits in 264 at bats. He has driven in 49 runs, slugging .481. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Pittsburgh's Willie Crawford this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Willie went 10 for 21 (.476), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 11 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Saturday 7/9/1978: Clay Kirby out for 5-6 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its ace Clay Kirby for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jeffrey Leonard in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 17 starts this year Clay struck out 69 batters in 122 innings of work. His ERA is 3.54, his record 5-8. He has 6 complete games and one shutout.
