MONTREAL - Montreal's left-hander Don Hood is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Atlanta on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Hood (9-9) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 101 pitches for strikes. Hiromitsu Kadota helped Hood at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, homering once. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Monday 7/18/1978: Bonds and Hebner win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was California's Bobby Bonds, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. Bobby went 13 for 27 (.481), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Bobby is hitting .268 this year, with 95 hits in 354 at bats. He has driven in 69 runs, slugging .545. He's 6th in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's rightfielder Richie Hebner. HOUSTON - San Diego's right-hander Chris Zachary is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Houston on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 20th time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Zachary (11-7) struck out 2 and issued 1 BB, throwing 70 of 112 pitches for strikes. Rod Carew helped Zachary at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, homering once, scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Sunday 7/17/1978: Bobby Bonds pounds three dingers
BOSTON - Bobby Bonds powered California to a 7-1 win over Boston. He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Jim Lonborg in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in left field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Jim Lonborg. A 331 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd bomb, a two-run homerun off Luis Tiant in the 9th inning. Overall he finished 3 for 5, scoring three runs and collecting 5 RBI. Ron Cey was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 7/14/1978.

SAN FRANCISCO - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Ray Burris did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against St. Louis. Burris (10-6) struck out 7 and walked 1, throwing 78 of 132 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.'
