Tuesday 7/26/1978: Roger Nelson pitches 1-hit shutout against New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Detroit's right-hander Roger Nelson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just one hit. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Ruppert Jones doubled with one out in the 6th inning. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Nelson (16-5) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 64 of 103 pitches for strikes. Detroit's first baseman Davey Johnson got 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nelson. Detroit scored 7 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 7/25/1978: Barrios (TOR) and Hood (MON) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Toronto's pitcher Francisco Barrios. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Francisco has a record of 5-5 this season, with an ERA of 4.52. In 91.2 Innings he was able to strike out 44 batters. Francisco has pitched 2 shutouts and 4 complete games. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Don Hood, one of Montreal's best starting pitchers. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 17 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts!

TEXAS - Roger Nelson took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Detroit's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 26 career shutouts in 333 games started. Nelson (15-5) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 59 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Davey Johnson provided Detroit with the offense Nelson needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 10-0.
