Monday 8/22/1978: Hall and Cey win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Tom Hall, one of California's best starting pitchers. Hall was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 19 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .192 against Tom this season. While posting an ERA of 2.16 he went 17-6 in 27 starts, fanning 182 and walking 62 hitters. He has 17 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Ron Cey from Philadelphia wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .519 and hit .480, while driving in 7 runs.
Thursday 8/18/1978: Dock Ellis turns in great performance against California
TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Dock Ellis is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking California on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. Ellis (9-12) struck out 6 and issued 4 BB, throwing 82 of 140 pitches for strikes. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Texas' designated hitter Ted Simmons finished 1 for 4, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Ellis. Texas scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
