Thursday 9/1/1978: Messersmith and Gullett receive Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Andy Messersmith. His ERA of just 1.01 helped him to a 5-0 record in August. He worked 53.1 innings, striking out 28 hitters while walking 9. Andy pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .208 against Andy this season. While posting an ERA of 2.30 he went 17-6 in 31 starts, fanning 126 and walking 62 hitters. He has 14 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Houston's Don Gullett. He started 5 games in August, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.84 in 43 innings. Don fanned 12 hitters. The American League's best player of the month was Kansas City's George Brett, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He hit .366 with 19 RBI and slugged .683 in 101 at bats. George has gone 161 for 479 (.336) this season, hitting 22 homeruns and driving in 88 runs. He has scored 93 runs on his own. He's 3rd in the American League in batting! Gorman Thomas of San Diego wins his 4th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He hit .362 with 19 RBI and slugged .660 in 94 at bats. Thomas has hit 25 longballs this year while batting .340. He adds 28 doubles, along with 84 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Wednesday 8/31/1978: Steve Renko (KCR) will miss 8 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its right-hander Steve Renko for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Danny Godby in a game against Milwaukee. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Herniated Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Steve has a record of 9-9 this season, with an ERA of 4.07. In 201 Innings he was able to strike out 71 batters. He has 3 complete games and one shutout.
Monday 8/29/1978: Boggs (BOS) and Torre (NYM) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's shortstop Wade Boggs. Wade pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .481 with 0 HR and 15 RBI while slugging .667. Wade managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Boggs has hit 5 longballs this year while batting .280. He adds 20 doubles, along with 69 runs scored. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to New York (N)'s Joe Torre this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 33 at bats he hit .485 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Friday 8/26/1978: Cincinnati's Rowland severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its right-hander Mike Rowland for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hideji Kato in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Mike has a record of 2-5 this season, with an ERA of 6.08. In 50.1 Innings he was able to strike out 50 batters.
Wednesday 8/24/1978: Rich Beck dominates Baltimore, throws NO-HITTER
BOSTON - Age doesn't matter. At least Boston's right-hander Rich Beck shares this opinion. The 38 year old pitched a no-hitter against Baltimore, showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. Beck (15-9) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 86 of 131 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' Wade Boggs helped Beck at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. Boston scored 9 runs on 15 hits.
Wednesday 8/24/1978: Mike Flanagan out for full season
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's left-hander Mike Flanagan experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 2nd inning of the game against New York (A), Flanagan complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Flanagan was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 3.67 helped him to a 10-13 record this year. He struck out 72 and walked 53 in 228 innings. Mike has pitched 4 shutouts and 11 complete games.
