Wednesday 9/14/1978: Don Gullett blanks Cincinnati with a 2-hitter
HOUSTON - Houston's left-hander Don Gullett is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. Gullett (19-7) struck out 2 and walked 3, throwing 56 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Houston's second baseman Joe L. Morgan finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, doubling once, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gullett. Houston improved its record to 77-68, scoring 2 runs on 6 hits.

NEW YORK (A) - On Wednesday, New York (A)'s first baseman Tony Muser displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Texas, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A 439 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st hit, a solo homerun off Dock Ellis in the 1st inning. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Dock Ellis. BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Bob Reynolds is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just 2 hits. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. Reynolds (24-4) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 70 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Cliff Johnson provided Boston with the offense Reynolds needed as he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate. The final score of the game was 1-0.

'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Knepper (10-13) did not have perfect control, walking 7. He struck out 3. Monday 9/12/1978: Tolan and Klages win Player of the Week award
It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Kansas City's centerfielder Bobby Tolan. Tolan helped his team with an average of .500 and 7 RBI in 22 at bats. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Fred Klages, one of Philadelphia's best starting pitchers. Klages was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53. Along the way he struck out 13 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.

SAN FRANCISCO - Gorman Thomas is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. He had singles in the 2nd , in the 3rd inning , in the 6th inning , in the 8th (one RBI) , in the 9th inning Gorman did drive in 3 while scoring one run on his own. Saturday 9/10/1978: Reggie Jackson stars with cycle against Philadelphia
HOUSTON - Houston's centerfielder Reggie Jackson accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Philadelphia, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .268! A single in the 2nd off Jack Morris accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Doug Rau in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 380 feet from home plate. A two-run triple off Doug Rau in the 5th inning, accounted for his 3rd hit. A RBI double off Al Holland in the 7th inning accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Reggie did drive in 6 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .265 this season, with 36 HR and 100 RBI.
