ST. LOUIS - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Roy J. Thomas will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against St. Louis on Thursday. Thomas (12-11) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 109 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Garry Maddox provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Thomas needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Wednesday 9/21/1978: Baltimore's Matthews Sr. out for full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's leftfielder Gary Matthews Sr. will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Baltimore and New York (A). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Matthews Sr. collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Baltimore wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Matthews Sr. had suffered a Torn Thigh Muscle. While compiling an on base percentage of .378, Gary hit .270 and slugged .564. He has collected 138 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Monday 9/19/1978: Pat Dobson fires NO-NO against St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - Atlanta's right-hander Pat Dobson made some history today, firing a no-hitter against St. Louis. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Michiyo Arito spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 8th inning. Dobson (9-11) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 64 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' The hitting star for Atlanta was rightfielder Amos Otis, he finished 2 for 4, hitting a double. Atlanta improved its record to 75-75, scoring 2 runs on 7 hits.

Gary Matthews Sr. from Baltimore wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Gary was on fire, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. Ken McMullen from Los Angeles (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Ken was on fire, hitting .706 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. This year McMullen drove in 46 and scored 50 runs while batting .278 with 6 longballs.
