Same, I was shocked it didn't happen with Thomas either. But the rule is there whenever it happens again. Honestly, I'm surprised there aren't more 20M contracts. Everyone is stingy lol. Stingy or fiscally responsible with thier teams? If I felt like over paying and have to trade away points n players for money all the time to pay for a ridiculous payroll maybe but no thx. Some are stingy ... like you, especially when it comes to extensions. Without even looking, I am betting you have the most pages in the extensions board lol

I agree it's hard, but the good thing it was just one player to one of those teams. They took the risk and will likely pay for it in a couple seasons and do a full rebuild, allowing other teams a chance to compete. It would be bad if the same team was constantly offering 20M+ to win over the guys each season and that doesn't happen here. In this case, it seems like it's a last-ditch effort for the Cubs to win and given the Pirates and Reds are rebuilding and Cardinals are going to be getting out of it soon, this is the perfect chance for the Cubs to stay on top for 2-3 seasons until the Cardinals come calling. As for the Padres, I think they were desperate to keep Thomas and if they traded for cash earlier before trade deadline, they would have resigned him anyway to 20M, so it was just a delayed signing bonus and guarantee to keep him. To me, I see it as a $5M crutch to keep the team together for 2-3 more seasons until the Giants take over. I think these are good signings. retoooling!

Had to get him to try and keep the dynasty going
