On the eve of Opening Day, word has trickled out that 7 rookies have made the Dodgers 25 man Opening Day roster. There are 5 pitchers - including 3 in the starting rotation - and 2 position players in the everyday lineup.
Rick Williams (26) - after a brief cameo in the billpen last season, Dave Dravecky (23), and the newly acquired David Palmer (21) have all been penciled into the starting rotation after their spring performances. Roy Thomas, the new kid in town last year, will now step into a leadership role for this staff at the young age of 25. They will be anchored by veteran stalwart Rob Gardner as long as he remains in town.
John Urrea, 24, earned himself a bullpen job and Victor Cruz, 21, got the final spot in the bullpen. That job was expected to go to a lefty but the Dodgers chose to go with the more talented hurler and roll with just 1 southpaw in the bullpen aside from closer Tommy John.
Damaso Garcia, the Dodgers first round pick in '75, appears set to run with the second base job while Tito Landrum gets his shot in center after hitting .372 with a strong .914 OPS in his third turn at AAA last season.
This will certainly be a year in transition for the Dodgers, and it will be interesting to see how these young guys develop as the season progresses. While the fans might not enjoy this group, the future of the Dodgers depends on them.
