Monday 5/2/1979: Stennett (TEX) and Briles (CIN) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Texas' second baseman Rennie Stennett. Rennie went 16 for 28 (.571), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 6 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Nelson Briles, one of Cincinnati's best starting pitchers. Briles was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53. Along the way he struck out 6 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1979: Chicago (N)'s Billingham named Pitcher of the Month
J.R. Richard couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 34 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 34 innings. His ERA in April was 1.25. The best month of April in the National League certainly had Chicago (N)'s right-hander Jack Billingham, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 0.96 helped him to a 4-0 record in April. He worked 47 innings, striking out 45 hitters while walking 5. Jack also fired a shutout.
Sunday 5/1/1979: Baltimore's May earns Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Baltimore's Carlos May, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Carlos pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .364 with 6 and 22 RBI while slugging .627. It's the 2nd time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Diego's third baseman Bill Madlock. He had an on base percentage of .402 and hit .358, while driving in 21 runs.
Friday 4/29/1979: Tom Hall quiets Oakland bats with shutout
CALIFORNIA - California's left-hander Tom Hall is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Oakland found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Hall 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 41st shutouts in his career. Hall (4-2) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 110 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Bill Melton provided California with the offense Hall needed as he finished with 2 hits in 2 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. California improved its record to 13-13, scoring 6 runs on 8 hits.
Thursday 4/28/1979: Chicago (N)'s Smalley III severely injured
CHICAGO (N) - San Diego's Rollie Fingers drilled Chicago (N)'s shortstop Roy Smalley III in the 9th inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Roy Smalley III will miss at least 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Hand which will require surgery. This year Smalley III drove in 7 and scored 10 runs while batting .235 with no taters.
Tuesday 4/26/1979: Frank Tanana pitches 1-hit shutout against New York (A)
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s southpaw Frank Tanana is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 6th time he has done it in his career. Tanana (3-2) fanned 8 and walked 2, throwing 140 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Frank Taveras helped Tanana at the plate, he finished 3 for 4, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (A) improved its record to 14-9, scoring 8 runs on 17 hits.
Monday 4/25/1979: San Francisco's Leonard wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Toby Harrah this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Harrah helped his team with an average of .458 and 10 RBI in 24 at bats. Harrah has hit 3 bombs this year while batting .241. He adds 2 doubles, along with 14 runs scored. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Jeffrey Leonard, San Francisco's starting leftfielder. Jeffrey was on fire, hitting .423 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. His season numbers are: .253 AVG, 21 hits, 4 doubles, one triple and 5 longballs, along with 19 RBI and 7 runs scored.
