Monday 5/9/1979: Houston's McRae severely injured
HOUSTON - Houston's leftfielder Hal McRae hurt himself in the 5th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Hal McRae will miss at least 6-7 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Hand. His season numbers are: .268 AVG, 30 hits, 7 doubles, no triples and 2 taters, along with 8 RBI and 19 runs scored.
Monday 5/9/1979: Dressler and Torre win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Rob Dressler, one of Detroit's best starting pitchers. Rob went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53, while fanning 8 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Joe Torre wins his 9th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .429, while driving in 6 runs. His season numbers are: .275 AVG, 30 hits, 3 doubles, no triples and 6 homeruns, along with 19 RBI and 19 runs scored.
Friday 5/6/1979: Toronto's Stanhouse out for 7 weeks
TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander Don Stanhouse will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Oakland where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Herniated Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Stanhouse compiled an ERA of 4.75, going 1-4 in 7 starts. He fanned 24 while giving up 42 hits in 41.2 innings.

OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's right-hander Dick Pole will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Toronto where he left the field in the 8th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .308 against Dick this season. While posting an ERA of 0.00 he went 1-0 in 0 starts, fanning 0 and walking 0 hitters.
