It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Andy Messersmith. Andy went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 16 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's George Hendrick, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He hit .462 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.038 in 26 at bats. This year Hendrick drove in 23 and scored 15 runs while batting .293 with 6 longballs.
Saturday 5/21/1979: New York (A)'s Lopez out for 7 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its right-hander Aurelio Lopez for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Fran Healy in a game against Kansas City. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. This season Lopez compiled an ERA of 6.28, going 0-2 in 0 starts. He fanned 4 while giving up 22 hits in 14.1 innings.
Friday 5/20/1979: Bobby Murcer stars with 2000th career hit
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's leftfielder Bobby Murcer already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1976 where he hit .327 with 26 homeruns and 103 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He hit a single in the 6th off Joaquin Andujar for number 2000.
Tuesday 5/17/1979: Rick Reuschel shuts out New York (N) on 2 hits
CINCINNATI - Rick Reuschel took the mound and never left. And New York (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Cincinnati's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 3 career shutouts in 124 games started. Gary Gray spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 5th inning. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Reuschel (4-3) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 107 pitches. Tony Perez helped Reuschel at the plate, he finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, hitting a double, scoring two runs and collecting 4 RBI. Monday 5/16/1979: Mike Easler out for 5 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's season took a blow when Mike Easler suffered a serious injury in the game against San Diego. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Easler will probaby miss 5 weeks. San Francisco wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Easler had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. Mike is hitting .312 this year, with 43 hits in 138 at bats. He has driven in 32 runs, slugging .565. He's 10th in the National League in batting and 3rd in RBI!

BALTIMORE - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Baltimore's centerfielder Merv Rettenmund accomplished that feat in a 7-4 win over Toronto. His 1st shot, off Dave Stewart in the 4th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Dave Stewart in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 372 feet from home plate. A pitch from Dave Stewart in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 383 feet from home plate in left field. Merv finished 3 for 5, with three runs scored and collecting 4 RBI.
