Coming off a World Series victory in 1978 and their third championship in five years, the Padres look to try and go back-to-back after failing to do so in 1975 and 1977 after making it to the World Series. The Padres made some interesting moves to try in getting younger. The Padres traded away SPs Bobby Singer, Larry Jaster, and Chris Zachary, all on the wrong side of thirty, for some young, unstablished arms. Can aces Dennis Eckersley, Don Sutton, and first-year Padre Larry Bearnarth help the rest of the rotation to finally bring back-to-back championships to San Diego?
On the bats side, 25 million dollar man Gorman Thomas will try and lead the Padre offence back to the World Series. Thomas' season has so far been down compared to last year, at least on the batting average side. Thomas is currently hitting .262 on the season with 10 HRs, compared to hitting .336 last season. After becoming the highest-paid player in the league, has he taken a step back now that he got his contract.
Bill Madlock on the other hand is having a great start to the new year. Currently hitting .370 with 10 HRs and a team-high 24 SBs, he is also only one of two players on the Padres to have a better record at home vs. on the road (.377 vs. .361, respectively). He will need to keep this hot start going if the "Stormin Gorman" is still struggling.
Will this finally be the year the Padres decide not to choke and make it back-to-back championships, or will it go down as another odd year bust for the Padres. We shall see...
