Jerry Bell pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 1.06 helped him to a 5-0 record in May. He worked 51 innings, striking out 20 hitters while walking 7. Jerry pitched THREE complete game shutouts! Opposing players hit .230 against Jerry this season. While posting an ERA of 2.39 he went 8-1 in 12 starts, fanning 29 and walking 19 hitters. He has 4 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! San Diego's Larry Bearnarth had a terrific May, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 5-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. The American League's best player of the month was Boston's Joe L. Morgan, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Joe L. pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .393 with 8 and 29 RBI while slugging .775. His season numbers are: .333 AVG, 60 hits, 11 doubles, one triple and 12 longballs, along with 50 RBI and 43 runs scored. He's 5th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Bill Madlock, San Diego's starting third baseman. Madlock helped his team with an average of .380 and 23 RBI in 108 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .418, Bill hit .369 and slugged .593. He has collected 44 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Monday 5/30/1979: Reggie Jackson pounds three dingers
ST. LOUIS - Reggie Jackson beat St. Louis, but he did it without mercy, playing like a one man wrecking crew. Atlanta's first baseman slugged three homeruns, once again proving that he is among the elite sluggers. His 1st shot, off John Tudor in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off John Tudor in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 386 feet from home plate. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 427 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Overall he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring three times and collecting 3 RBI. So far this season he is batting .247 with 12 homers and 28 RBI. Atlanta scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 5/30/1979: Pittsburgh's Crawford wins Player of the Week award
Tony Conigliaro wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .444 with 10 RBI and slugged .815 in 27 at bats. Conigliaro has hit for a .275 average this season. He has 22 extra base hits along with 90 total bases, resulting in a .539 slugging percentage. Pittsburgh's centerfielder Willie Crawford had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .586 and hit .478, while driving in 7 runs. His season numbers are: .317 AVG, 63 hits, 6 doubles, no triples and 8 homeruns, along with 24 RBI and 34 runs scored. He's 9th in the National League in batting!
Saturday 5/28/1979: Jose Cardenal ropes 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s centerfielder Jose Cardenal was in good mood after the game against Philadelphia, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 11th off Bill Castro for number 2000. His best year so far was 1978 where he hit .279 with 15 homeruns and 77 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
Friday 5/27/1979: Jim McGlothlin turns in great performance against Montreal
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Jim McGlothlin is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Montreal found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. McGlothlin 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 19th shutouts in his career. McGlothlin (7-4) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 78 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Dale Murphy provided Atlanta with the offense McGlothlin needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring two runs. Atlanta scored 5 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 5/25/1979: Dave Dravecky out for 7-8 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s lefty Dave Dravecky suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 7-8 weeks. In the 1st of the game against San Diego he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Herniated Disc Back. His ERA of 5.51 helped him to a 4-5 record this year. He struck out 27 and walked 26 in 63.2 innings.
Wednesday 5/25/1979: Luis Tiant pitches 1-hit shutout against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Boston's right-hander Luis Tiant is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Minnesota found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Tiant 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 56th shutouts in his career. Tiant (6-4) struck out 1 and walked 6, throwing 63 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' The hitting star for Boston was rightfielder Carl Yastrzemski, he finished 2 for 5, blasting a homerun. The final score of the game was 6-0.
