Tuesday 7/19/1979: Jerry Reuss (MIL) will miss 6 weeks
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's lefty Jerry Reuss suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Oakland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Milwaukee wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Reuss had suffered a Ruptured Bicep Tendon. This season Reuss compiled an ERA of 3.26, going 11-6 in 19 starts. He fanned 84 while giving up 140 hits in 146.1 innings. Jerry has pitched 2 shutouts and 7 complete games.
Monday 7/18/1979: Bradford and Lynn win Player of the Week award
Buddy Bradford from Baltimore wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Buddy pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .444 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.111. Bradford has hit for a .323 average this season. He has 25 extra base hits along with 148 total bases, resulting in a .514 slugging percentage. He's 4th in the American League in batting! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Montreal's Fred Lynn this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Lynn helped his team with an average of .444 and 8 RBI in 27 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. This year Lynn drove in 29 and scored 50 runs while batting .325 with 10 homeruns. He's 2nd in the National League in batting!
Sunday 7/17/1979: Rob Gardner quiets Kansas City bats with shutout
KANSAS CITY - Rob Gardner had some fun again. Kansas City hitters did not. Minnesota's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 315 games started. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Gardner (8-8) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 9. Minnesota's centerfielder Adolfo Phillips finished 2 for 3, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gardner. Minnesota improved its record to 55-38, scoring 4 runs on 8 hits.
Thursday 7/14/1979: Baltimore's Ruhle severely injured
BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's ace Vern Ruhle will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston where he left the field in the 5th inning. Ruhle was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Spasms Back. Vern has a record of 4-9 this season, with an ERA of 5.27. In 123 Innings he was able to strike out 80 batters.
Thursday 7/14/1979: Tom Hall fires 1-hitter against New York (A)
CALIFORNIA - California's southpaw Tom Hall is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. New York (A) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Hall 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 44th shutouts in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Hall (10-6) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 69 of 100 pitches for strikes. Vic Correll helped Hall at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering twice, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. California improved its record to 39-52, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
Wednesday 7/13/1979: Marc Hill clubs five hits in a game
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' catcher Marc Hill once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Philadelphia's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Wednesday. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Allen Ripley. His 3rd hit was a double off Allen Ripley in the 7th inning. His 4th hit, off Clay Carroll in the 9th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. The game was tied, 5-5, after the blast. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 11th inning . Marc scored 2 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He is hitting .268 this season, with 12 HR and 35 RBI. The final score of the game was 6-5.
