Monday 7/25/1979: Player of the Week honors go to Carbo and Hoyt
Minnesota's designated hitter Bernie Carbo had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Bernie went 10 for 27 (.370), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 12 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Montreal's LaMarr Hoyt, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Hoyt was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 20 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Thursday 7/21/1979: Don Sutton turns in great performance against Cincinnati
SAN DIEGO - Great days are rare. But not for San Diego's right-hander Don Sutton. Cincinnati found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 49th time he has done it in his career. With two outs in the 8th inning Tony Perez singled to break up the no-hitter. Sutton (12-6) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Orlando Gomez helped Sutton at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. San Diego scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
