ST. LOUIS - With his best stuff going, Cincinnati's Ken Forsch overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. St. Louis had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Forsch (14-8) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 72 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Cincinnati's third baseman Tony Perez got 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, doubling once, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Forsch. Cincinnati improved its record to 68-56, scoring 8 runs on 10 hits.
Tuesday 8/23/1979: Marc Hill (STL) will miss 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' catcher Marc Hill will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Ulna. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Hill drove in 50 and scored 52 runs while batting .259 with 13 bombs.
Monday 8/22/1979: Houston has no chance in a 2-hitter by Tom Hausman
HOUSTON - Atlanta's right-hander Tom Hausman is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Houston found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Hausman 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Hausman (13-6) struck out 3 and walked none, throwing 57 of 94 pitches for strikes. Syd O'Brien helped Hausman at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Monday 8/22/1979: New York (N)'s Dick Dietz gets milestone hit
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s first baseman Dick Dietz was in good mood after the game against Los Angeles (N), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 8th inning was a single off Pete Cimino. His best year so far was 1974 where he hit .279 with 41 homeruns and 120 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
Monday 8/22/1979: McCarver and Thomas win Player of the Week award
Detroit's catcher Tim McCarver had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Tim pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .524 with 4 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.190. McCarver has hit for a .300 average this season. He has 39 extra base hits along with 209 total bases, resulting in a .489 slugging percentage. San Diego's centerfielder Gorman Thomas had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Gorman was on fire, hitting .522 with 2 HR and 5 RBI.

HOUSTON - Houston is without its ace Bob Knepper for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Steve Garvey in a game against Pittsburgh. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Tricep Muscle. He now has 23 career shutouts in 365 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Klages (13-7) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 65 of 111 pitches for strikes. Philadelphia's leftfielder Rick Monday stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring twice.
