As the temperature rose with the calendar, so did the heat on the Dodgers bench. In the 6 weeks leading up to the trade deadline, many changes were made by The Boys in Blue.
Gone are veteran 28 year old 3B Otto Velez, 30 year old SS Dave Concepcion, 33 year old 1B/LF Tom Hutton, 35 year old IF Roy White, 34 year old SP Rob Gardner, 36 year old closer Tommy John, 30 year old reliever Tom Walker, and 35 year old reliever Dick Bosman. Collectively 261 years of life experience and 7 major leaguers departed before the trade deadline.
A collection of young players were brought in to replace them. 21 year old top prospect Bill Doran, 24 year old reliever Ray Searage, 25 year old starter Larry Christensen, 21 year old closer Luis DeLeon, 19 year old outfielder Rod Allen, 21 year old infielder Marty Barrett, 25 year old infielder Tom Brookens, 2 first round draft picks, 2 second round draft picks, 2 third round draft picks, a few long shot prospects, and a couple of veteran fillers in SS Ken McMullen, P Tom Murphy, and P Denny O'Toole made up the haul brought in by the Dodgers.
They then struck a waiver deal to send Rod Allen and the 3rd round pick acquired for Tommy John to the White Sox for veteran pitcher Mike Cosgrove who was squeezed out of a spot in Chicago. Cosgrove's role is undecided at this point - he will either give the team a much needed southpaw in the bullpen or be given a shot to start.
Out of the Dodgers current top 10 prospects, just 2 of them - SP' s Dave Dravecky and Bob Walk - were in their preseason top 10. 6 were acquired via trade, 2 were drafted, and 1 (Walk) was developed further. The Dodgers, who had just 1 top 100 prospect before the draft, now boast 8 top 100 prospects with a few more borderline.
It might take some time to realize their potential, but with the young talent in the pipeline the Dodgers are cautiously optimistic about their future - that optimism didn't exist a few months ago.
