Monday 9/5/1979: Philadelphia's Cash out for full season
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's shortstop Dave Cash will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Philadelphia and Cincinnati. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Cash collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. This year Cash drove in 26 and scored 74 runs while batting .303 with 2 homeruns. He's 9th in the National League in batting!
Monday 9/5/1979: Eddie Murray on fire, laces five hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Eddie Murray is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A 445 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a three-run homerun off Jim Merritt in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Denny O'Toole in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 337 feet from home plate in right field. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 1st inning (two RBIs) and in the 9th inning . Eddie scored 4 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .311. San Francisco scored 23 runs on 20 hits.
Monday 9/5/1979: Player of the Week honors go to Spikes and Cooper
Charlie Spikes from Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Spikes helped his team with an average of .519 and 11 RBI in 27 at bats. Charlie has gone 146 for 475 (.307) this season, hitting 14 bombs and driving in 67 runs. He has scored 74 runs on his own. He's 8th in the American League in batting! It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s first baseman Cecil Cooper. Cecil went 11 for 21 (.524), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 5 RBI.
Sunday 9/4/1979: Bob Reynolds dominates California, throws NO-HITTER
CALIFORNIA - Bob Reynolds had some fun again. REAL fun. California hitters did not. Boston's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 27 career shutouts in 205 games started. Vic Correll spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 9th inning. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today. That's a dream coming true for me!' Reynolds (20-9) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 65 of 108 pitches for strikes. Tony Conigliaro provided Boston with the offense Reynolds needed as he collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, hitting a double, with 3 RBI. Boston improved its record to 87-49, scoring 9 runs on 16 hits.
