The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston's Wade Boggs this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Wade went 13 for 21 (.619), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 6 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .374, Wade hit .276 and slugged .340. He has collected 43 runs batted in this year. Don Gullett of San Francisco wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Gullett was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 5 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts!
Sunday 9/11/1979: Don Gullett shuts out St. Louis on 2 hits
ST. LOUIS - San Francisco's lefty Don Gullett is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. St. Louis found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Gullett 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 15th shutouts in his career. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Gullett (25-5) fanned 3 and walked 3, throwing 115 pitches. John Stearns provided San Francisco with the offense Gullett needed as he went 2 for 3, homering once, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Sunday 9/11/1979: Cleveland has no chance in a 2-hitter by Bill Hands
CLEVELAND - Age doesn't matter. At least Kansas City's right-hander Bill Hands shares this opinion. The 39 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Cleveland, recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Hands (2-3) did not have perfect control, walking 6. He struck out 4. The hitting star for Kansas City was leftfielder John Lowenstein, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, going deep twice, scoring two runs and driving in 4 runs. Kansas City scored 8 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 9/10/1979: It's NO-NO time for Tom Hausman against Montreal
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Tom Hausman made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Montreal. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Hausman (16-7) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 92 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Gene Richards provided Atlanta with the offense Hausman needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. Atlanta scored 1 run on 8 hits.
Thursday 9/8/1979: Tim McCarver ropes 2000th career hit
DETROIT - Tim McCarver got a standing ovation from 50271 fans in Detroit, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. With two outs in the 1st inning, Tim drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 13 years of big league action so far, Tim has compiled a batting average of .274, along with 318 homeruns and 1272 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.'
