Saturday 10/1/1979: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Tom Hall pitched like a legend in September, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 8 games in September, going 7-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.83 in 68.2 innings. Tom fanned 52 hitters. Tom pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .203 against Tom this season. While posting an ERA of 2.65 he went 20-9 in 36 starts, fanning 208 and walking 82 hitters. Tom has pitched 5 shutouts and 22 complete games. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 6th in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is San Diego's Don Sutton. He struck out 50 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 50 innings. His ERA in September was 0.69. Don got two complete game shutouts as well! In 33 starts this year Don struck out 242 batters in 274.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.49, his record 23-8. New York (A)'s shortstop Jorge Orta had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He hit .391 with 26 RBI and slugged .750 in 92 at bats. His season features a batting average of .294 (157 hits in 534 AB), 30 doubles, 7 triples and 26 longballs. Orta collected 102 RBI and 83 runs as well. The National League's best player of the month was Pittsburgh's Bobby Grich, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 101 at bats he hit .347 with 10 HR and 29 RBI. Grich has hit 28 taters this year while batting .274. He adds 33 doubles, along with 110 runs scored. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 8th in homeruns!
Monday 9/26/1979: Player of the Week honors go to Simmons and Jackson
Texas' catcher Ted Simmons had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Ted was on fire, hitting .481 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Simmons has hit 22 homeruns this year while batting .285. He adds 42 doubles, along with 83 runs scored. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Reggie Jackson this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Jackson helped his team with an average of .407 and 8 RBI in 27 at bats. Reggie is hitting .270 this year, with 144 hits in 534 at bats. He has driven in 107 runs, slugging .560. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
