As the second round draws to a close, the Dodgers welcome three more players into the organization. Going into round 2, the club didn't have specific players targeted as they did in round 1, but instead were targeting specific roles. Among those targets were bullpen youth to help backfill for the relief options that were packaged for trades in round 1, a utility player that could provide coverage in several areas, and outfield help as the Dodgers expect to graduate multiple outfielders to the major leagues soon.
The Dodgers filled those roles with right handed reliever Billy Taylor taken with the 5th pick, second baseman Randy Ready taken with the 7th pick, and outfielder Gerry Davis taken with the 13th pick.
Taylor, a lanky 6'8" fireballer will bring his high 90's heat to the late inning mix. He will need to refine his control to maximize his potential. At just 18 years of age, he has plenty of development time ahead of him to work on his game. Because of his age, he could be developed to fill a larger role as well.
In order to draft Ready, the Dodgers traded away 2 pitchers that were getting squeezed out of spots in a numbers game and had been passed by others in the system. Randy Ready looks like a nice future utility guy that has a chance to be a regular player in the majors if a few breaks go his way. He's got an average bat, controls the strike zone well, can steal a few bases, and has defensive versatility. He could fit in with the big club in a number of ways.
Set to turn in a different selection with the 13th pick, acquired from KC for Tom Walker, Dodgers brass noticed another player just before announcing their pick. That player was Gerry Davis. Overlooked potentially due to his average hit tool and below average home run power the Dodgers were very pleased to find this type of talent still on the board in the mid-2nd round. He excels almost everywhere else. He has very good gap power, good control of the strike zone, average speed and plus defense. He has the potential to be a great defender and above average base stealer. He could one day fit at the top of the batting order.
Also onsidered part of their 2nd round draft haul is major league third baseman Otto Velez. The Dodgers re-acquired their former third baseman in an off-season deal with the rival Giants. The Dodgers sent the 20th pick in the 2nd round to get the 29 year old back. The Giants used that pick on relief prospect Cecilio Guante who the club had also considered with the 13th pick. The Dodgers expect a bounce back campaign from the talented Velez that resembles his previous seasons after a down year in 1980.
All in all, the club is pleased with how the 2nd round progressed and felt they were able to find good fits for their organization.
