Thursday 4/14/1980: Baltimore has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Scott Sanderson
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's bats were sleeping, and Boston's Scott Sanderson gave them no chance at all to wake up. He was untouchable in firing a no-hitter in his 3rd game started this season. Carlos May spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 5th inning. Sanderson (1-1) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 77 of 130 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Boston's designated hitter Herman Hill collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Sanderson. Boston scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 4/11/1980: Grich and Madlock win Player of the Week award
Detroit's designated hitter Bobby Grich had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Bobby Murcer provided San Diego with the offense Corkins needed as he finished with 2 hits in 2 AB, homering once. San Diego improved its record to 3-4, scoring 5 runs on 7 hits.
Friday 4/8/1980: Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt gets the cycle
PHILADELPHIA - Mike Schmidt is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A RBI double off LaMarr Hoyt in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a RBI triple off LaMarr Hoyt. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off LaMarr Hoyt. A single in the 7th off Fritz Peterson accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Mike scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .238 this season, with 1 HR and 3 RBI. 51 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Mike. ATLANTA - Philadelphia's offense is struggling, and Atlanta's Tom Hausman didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Hausman (1-0) struck out 1 and issued 1 BB, throwing 52 of 90 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' The hitting star for Atlanta was third baseman U.L. Washington, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Monday 4/4/1980: Frank Tanana pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Frank Tanana overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Milwaukee had no chance, collecting just one hit against the left-hander. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Tanana (1-0) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 48 of 90 pitches for strikes. Chicago (A)'s designated hitter Mike Rogodzinski went 2 for 4, homering once, with 5 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Tanana.
