Monday 4/25/1980: San Diego's Sutton wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Ken Phelps this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 23 at bats he hit .609 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. His season features a batting average of .395 (32 hits in 81 AB), 7 doubles, 3 triples and 5 taters. Phelps collected 19 RBI and 16 runs as well. He's 2nd in the American League in batting and 9th in RBI! Don Sutton of San Diego wins his 5th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.80, while fanning 11 in 15 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Sutton compiled an ERA of 2.78, going 3-1 in 5 starts. He fanned 28 while giving up 35 hits in 35.2 innings. He has 2 complete games and 2 shutouts.
Sunday 4/24/1980: Craig Swan fires 2-hitter against California
OAKLAND - Oakland's right-hander Craig Swan is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. California found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Swan 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 14th shutouts in his career. Swan (2-2) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 80 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Oakland's centerfielder Rick Monday collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Swan. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Friday 4/22/1980: Toronto's Cook severely injured
TORONTO - Toronto's lefty Ron Cook suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Boston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Cook was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 4 starts this year Ron struck out 24 batters in 26.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.39, his record 1-0.
Tuesday 4/19/1980: Bobby Bonds collects 2000th hit against Chicago (A)
CALIFORNIA - California's Bobby Bonds showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Chicago (A) on Tuesday. He hit a double in the 5th off Frank Tanana for number 2000. Along with his 2000 hits, Bobby collected 380 homeruns and 1228 RBI in 14 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
