Monday 6/6/1980: New York (A)'s Augustine severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - When it rains, it pours. New York (A)'s left-hander Jerry Augustine will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 6th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Bone Chips Shoulder which will require surgery. In 7 starts this year Jerry struck out 20 batters in 35.2 innings of work. His ERA is 6.56, his record 2-1.
Monday 6/6/1980: Detroit's Nelson wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Roger Nelson, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Roger went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 5 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Willie Montanez this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Montanez helped his team with an average of .500 and 8 RBI in 20 at bats.
Saturday 6/4/1980: Steve McCatty (HOU) will miss 7 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's pitcher Steve McCatty was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 1st inning of the game between Houston and Atlanta. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. McCatty will miss about 7 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Finger. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 2.83 helped him to a 2-5 record this year. He struck out 26 and walked 32 in 76.1 innings. Steve has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
Saturday 6/4/1980: Jerry Reuss out for 7 weeks
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's left-hander Jerry Reuss suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Oakland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .290 against Jerry this season. While posting an ERA of 5.94 he went 3-4 in 12 starts, fanning 54 and walking 23 hitters.
