After having one of the best farm systems in all of baseball since the new regime in Atlanta took over, it appears the Funkytown is just a few call ups shy of having a system completely void of any MLB prospects. In the last 3 years the likes of pitchers J Fulgham, P Hartzell, T Housman, D Robinson, L Rautzhan, D Corbett, and fielders G Allenson, A Wiggins, UL Washington, M Wilson, G Richards, and of course the amazing Dale Murphy have all been called up from the Atlanta Minors system. Of those 5 have already been all stars.
The players remaining in the minors, the top one there is #6 rated for the minors Gary Redus. Scouts have him as a five star prospect that just keeps getting better every day. As resent as last season one reporter overheard a GM from another team saying he was garbage, and apparently word must have got to Gary as since then he has just exploded. At the pace he is going, Mookie is likely going to be a backup OF while Jackson finishes his career at first before opening the door for either Richards or Redus to take over first.
Kelly Downs (SP) comes in at the #58th rated minor prospect. So far the 19 year old has been a stout competitor at all levels of the minors, and with a little luck in development could turn into a quality rotation pitcher. Without further development in a couple areas he would be destine to be a middle reliever when he does get called up.
Mark Brouhard (rated #96) is a victum of being on a team with a lot of talent. The guy can play anywhere and not only hits for avg, but has good pop in his bat. It's a forgone conclusion that he will be on the MLB roster next year with both J Johnstone and R Scheinblum's contracts expiring at the end of this year.
Rafael Ramirez is the air apparent in the middle of the field playing both 2B and SS, while no pop in the bat he has the tools to steal 30+ bases a year while being a staunch defender.
Rounding out the list is catcher Dave Valle. While his last name sounds like a name of a song David Lee Roth would remake, the kid has talent behind the plate, a great arm and can downright hit the ball. He should be ready to step up once Yeager is ready to sit down.
