SAN DIEGO - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Don Hood is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Diego on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Hood (8-4) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 62 of 104 pitches for strikes. Sal Bando helped Hood at the plate, he went 2 for 4, homering once, with 2 RBI. Los Angeles (N) scored 5 runs on 11 hits.

TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Fred Newman suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Milwaukee he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Newman was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Tricep Muscle. In 16 starts this year Fred struck out 16 batters in 92.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.79, his record 4-9.

SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Larry Bearnarth gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. He struck out 1 and walked one earned run. Over 7 innings he allowed one earned run and 7 hits. His career features a 2.66 ERA, along with 1906 K's in 3931 innings.
