It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's leftfielder Charlie Spikes. He had an on base percentage of .483 and hit .440, while driving in 10 runs. Charlie has gone 111 for 340 (.326) this season, hitting 20 taters and driving in 76 runs. He has scored 66 runs on his own. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 5th in RBI! Fred Lynn wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Lynn helped his team with an average of .591 and 3 RBI in 22 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now.
Sunday 7/17/1980: Steve Brye punishes Boston with three dingers
BOSTON - Steve Brye can hit'em a long way, and Boston pitchers couldn't smile about that today. New York (A)'s rightfielder unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. His 1st shot, off Jim Lonborg in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Dyar Miller in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 464 feet from home plate. His 3rd shot, a two-run homerun off Dyar Miller in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left field. Steve finished 3 for 5, with three runs scored with 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-2.
Tuesday 7/12/1980: Jim Willoughby (CIN) will miss 7 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its right-hander Jim Willoughby for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Tom Harmon in a game against San Diego. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Jim struck out 20 batters in 54.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.64, his record 6-0.
