Tuesday 7/26/1980: Vern Ruhle quiets Montreal bats with shutout
ST. LOUIS - Vern Ruhle had some fun again. Montreal hitters did not. St. Louis' right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 159 games started. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Ruhle (7-5) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 69 of 109 pitches for strikes. Bill Almon helped Ruhle at the plate, he finished 4 for 4, going deep twice, scoring three times and driving in 6 runs. The final score of the game was 16-0.
Monday 7/25/1980: Baltimore's Roenicke wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Gary Roenicke, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Gary pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .471 with 2 HR and 11 RBI while slugging .794. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. He has hit 15 homeruns while batting .220 this season. His 87 hits and 52 walks add up to a .316 on-base percentage. Jose Cruz Sr. wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 26 at bats he hit .500 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 19 game hitting streak right now. This year Cruz Sr. drove in 59 and scored 50 runs while batting .294 with 18 longballs.
Saturday 7/23/1980: Tom Seaver turns in great performance against Pittsburgh
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Tom Seaver is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 56th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Bruce Bochte singled with no outs in the 8th inning. Seaver (9-9) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 98 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' The hitting star for New York (N) was shortstop Dave L. Stapleton, he finished 2 for 4, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. New York (N) improved its record to 45-53, scoring 6 runs on 8 hits.
Friday 7/22/1980: Dan Ford nabs six hits against Boston
BOSTON - Baltimore's rightfielder Dan Ford accomplished a difficult feat in a 30-0 win over Boston, drilling six hits to improve his career batting average to .271! In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Frank Riccelli. A pitch from Jack Aker in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI double. His 5th hit was a double off Dyar Miller in the 8th inning. His 6th cleared the based, a three-run double off Dyar Miller in the 9th inning. He collected singles in the 4th inning and in the 7th inning . Dan did drive in 6 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He is hitting .231 this season, with 12 HR and 62 RBI. Baltimore scored 30 runs on 24 hits.
