The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Andre Dawson this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .520 and hit .455, while driving in 8 runs. His season numbers are: .293 AVG, 124 hits, 16 doubles, 10 triples and 29 longballs, along with 91 RBI and 92 runs scored. He's 4th in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! St. Louis' third baseman Jack Clark had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Jack went 10 for 20 (.500), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. Clark has walked 62 times this year and posts a .405 OBP. While batting .304, 117 for 385, he has driven in 75 runs. He's 7th in the National League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 9th in RBI!
Sunday 8/7/1980: San Diego's Zachry severely injured
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Pat Zachry suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 22 starts this year Pat struck out 64 batters in 156.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.63, his record 14-4. He has 3 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the National League in wins!
Sunday 8/7/1980: Huge blow for Pittsburgh's Petry, career over
PITTSBURGH - It was one of baseball saddest days. Pittsburgh's right-hander Dan Petry fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against San Diego on Sunday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to George C. Scott, then suddenly collapsed. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 4.22 helped him to a 2-12 record this year. He struck out 39 and walked 45 in 119.1 innings. His career featured a record of 2-12 with an ERA of 4.22. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Minnesota's Masayuki Kakefu this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .464 and hit .423, while driving in 10 runs. Dave Winfield from San Diego wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Dave pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .478 with 3 HR and 10 RBI while slugging .913.

Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Minnesota's Marcelino Lopez. His record of 4-0 in 4 was among the leagues best this month. In 31 innings of work he allowed just 14 hits while striking out 11, compiling an ERA of just 0.87. Marcelino also fired a shutout. In 21 starts this year Marcelino struck out 70 batters in 144.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.81, his record 12-2. Marcelino has pitched 2 shutouts and 4 complete games.
