BALTIMORE - Wayne Gross was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Baltimore to a 10-7 win over Cleveland by homering three times. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Mike Flanagan. A pitch from Mike Flanagan in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 425 feet from home plate in right-center. A 392 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd bomb, a two-run homerun off Manny Sarmiento in the 7th inning. Overall he got 3 hits in 3 AB, with three runs scored and driving in 4 runs. His homerun total this year is 17, along with 53 RBI. Joe Charboneau was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 8/10/1980.
Monday 8/15/1980: Player of the Week honors go to Tenace and Sutton
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Minnesota's catcher Gene Tenace. In 19 at bats he hit .526 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. Gene has gone 108 for 364 (.297) this season, hitting 19 bombs and driving in 53 runs. He has scored 63 runs on his own. The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's Don Sutton, who wins the award for the 6th time in his career. Sutton was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Sutton compiled an ERA of 2.11, going 12-5 in 24 starts. He fanned 144 while giving up 141 hits in 183 innings. Don has pitched 4 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 9th in wins!
Thursday 8/11/1980: Larry Bearnarth pitches his 1st shutout of the season
PHILADELPHIA - San Diego's right-hander Larry Bearnarth is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Philadelphia found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Bearnarth 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 58th shutouts in his career. Bearnarth (12-5) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 55 of 92 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Rod Carew helped Bearnarth at the plate, he collected 5 hits in 5 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring three times. San Diego scored 5 runs on 12 hits.
Thursday 8/11/1980: Huge blow for New York (A)'s Verhoeven, career over
NEW YORK (A) - It was one of baseball saddest days. New York (A)'s right-hander John Verhoeven fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Kansas City on Thursday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Amos Otis, then suddenly collapsed. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. John has a record of 5-2 this season, with an ERA of 3.83. In 51.2 Innings he was able to strike out 29 batters. His career featured a record of 20-10 with an ERA of 3.06. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Wednesday 8/10/1980: Joe Charboneau blisters three bombs
TEXAS - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Joe Charboneau accomplished that feat in a 11-4 win over Texas. His 1st shot, off Steve Carlton in the 4th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from Steve Carlton in the 5th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 374 feet from home plate in left field. His 3rd blast, a two-run homerun off Angel Torres in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 406 feet from home plate. Joe collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three times with 4 RBI. So far this season he is batting .241 with 16 homers and 69 RBI. Steve Brye was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 7/17/1980. The final score of the game was 11-4.
Tuesday 8/9/1980: Baltimore's McAnally out for 6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore is without its ace Ernie McAnally for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bob Molinaro in a game against Chicago (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Baltimore wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that McAnally had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. Opposing players hit .317 against Ernie this season. While posting an ERA of 5.38 he went 9-10 in 23 starts, fanning 89 and walking 31 hitters.
