KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's right-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against California where he left the field in the 5th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Eduardo has a record of 2-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.63. In 51.1 Innings he was able to strike out 26 batters.
Monday 8/22/1980: Gross () and Horner (STL) win P.O.W. award
It's the 0th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Wayne went 10 for 21 (.476), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 8 RBI. St. Louis' first baseman Bob Horner had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Bob went 13 for 24 (.542), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 9 RBI. His season features a batting average of .241 (108 hits in 448 AB), 18 doubles, 3 triples and 28 taters. Horner collected 80 RBI and 62 runs as well.
Friday 8/19/1980: Philadelphia's Ron Cey slams five hits
PITTSBURGH - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Philadelphia's third baseman Ron Cey after the 23-3 win over Pittsburgh. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Tom Tellmann in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in center field. Number 4 in the 6th inning accounted for a two-run double. Number 5 in the 7th inning accounted for a two-run double. He had singles in the 1st inning and in the 5th inning . Ron scored 3 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .256.
Friday 8/19/1980: Philadelphia's Bethke out for 7 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's ace Jim Bethke will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Pittsburgh where he left the field in the 3rd inning. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Bethke had suffered a Strained Elbow Ligament. In 24 starts this year Jim struck out 116 batters in 158.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.13, his record 9-4.
Thursday 8/18/1980: Charlie Lea blanks California with a 2-hitter
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Charlie Lea will never forget this day. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against California on Thursday. Lea (1-1) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' The hitting star for Cleveland was first baseman Mike Hargrove, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. The final score of the game was 2-0.
