Thursday 9/1/1980: Ruthven and Sutton receive Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to California's pitcher Dick Ruthven. He started 7 games in August, going 6-1 and compiling an ERA of 1.25 in 50.1 innings. Dick fanned 14 hitters. Dick also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .236 against Dick this season. While posting an ERA of 2.69 he went 15-9 in 30 starts, fanning 44 and walking 57 hitters. Dick has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. Don Sutton couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 0.56 helped him to a 6-0 record in August. He worked 48.1 innings, striking out 32 hitters while walking 8. Don pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.97 helped him to a 15-5 record this year. He struck out 158 and walked 41 in 205.1 innings. Don has pitched 4 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 4th in wins!
Thursday 9/1/1980: Red hot Hernandez and Murray win Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Milwaukee's Keith Hernandez, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. In 111 at bats he hit .405 with 9 HR and 32 RBI. His season features a batting average of .347 (175 hits in 504 AB), 33 doubles, 3 triples and 20 homeruns. Hernandez collected 100 RBI and 107 runs as well. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 7th in RBI! San Francisco's first baseman Eddie Murray had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Eddie was on fire, hitting .347 with 11 homeruns and 21 RBI. His season numbers are: .335 AVG, 162 hits, 23 doubles, 2 triples and 30 longballs, along with 101 RBI and 95 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Wednesday 8/31/1980: Cleveland's Lea out for full season
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Charlie Lea experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 6th inning of the game against Oakland, Lea complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .172 against Charlie this season. While posting an ERA of 2.45 he went 2-1 in 4 starts, fanning 10 and walking 10 hitters. Charlie has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Monday 8/29/1980: Chicago (A)'s Jimmy McMath hits for the cycle
BOSTON - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Jimmy McMath once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Boston's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Monday. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a triple off Marty DeMerritt. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a double. A single in the 7th off Frank Riccelli accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 9th inning he unloaded a GRAND SLAM off Frank Riccelli. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Jimmy did drive in 6 while scoring 5 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 107 hits in 343 at bats, resulting in a .312 batting average. He becomes the 52nd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Mike Schmidt was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/8/1980.

The American League's best player of the week was California's Tony Horton, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 21 at bats he hit .429 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. San Diego's first baseman George C. Scott had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Scott helped his team with an average of .500 and 6 RBI in 24 at bats.
Saturday 8/27/1980: Don Gullett (SFG) will miss 5 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco is without its left-hander Don Gullett for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Terry Kennedy in a game against Cincinnati. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Don has a record of 14-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.12. In 210.1 Innings he was able to strike out 81 batters. He has 5 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 6th in the National League in wins!
