Thursday 9/22/1980: Atlanta's Richards severely injured
ATLANTA - Atlanta's rightfielder Gene Richards suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Rib Cage Muscle. His season numbers are: .256 AVG, 147 hits, 13 doubles, 13 triples and 10 longballs, along with 45 RBI and 82 runs scored.
Wednesday 9/21/1980: Bill Madlock collects five hits against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Bill Madlock is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Rick Matula in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from Mel Behney in the 10th inning left his bat for a triple. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 6th inning and in the 8th inning . Bill scored 3 runs, and he collected one RBI as well! He now has a total of 168 hits this season, accounting for a .305 batting average. San Diego scored 6 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 9/19/1980: Walling and Thomas win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Denny Walling this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 24 at bats he hit .500 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. His season features a batting average of .300 (149 hits in 497 AB), 26 doubles, 6 triples and 17 bombs. Walling collected 89 RBI and 87 runs as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Diego's Gorman Thomas this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Gorman went 9 for 22 (.409), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 8 RBI. His season numbers are: .302 AVG, 153 hits, 23 doubles, 7 triples and 33 taters, along with 116 RBI and 80 runs scored. He's 9th in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
