In an amazing trade, Atlanta decided to trade for a youngster that make the team go pow, now versus starting to put quality players back into the minors. 26 yr old Gary Reonicke was traded for bringing more BOOM to the Atlanta line up. Ironically he is rejoining Pitcher Jon Matlack, both were originally drafted by San Diego, were sent to Minnesota in a package deal, and then individually both sent to Baltimore where they played together and then each sent in separate trades to Atlanta. Gary will be entering only his 2nd full season to start the 81 campaign and has a total of 36 homers in his 900 at bats averaging going park every 25 at bats. Atlanta's coaches have a history of making their fielders even better, so there is little doubt he will improve under their tutelage into a premier defensive left fielder, with only his arm strength being a possible issue. With him playing left field, luckily for the Braves, arm strength isn't really a huge issue. While a couple years older than Mookie, Gary is still young enough that him, Murph, and Richards are destine to be the core outfielders for the Braves for a long, long time. And as Casey will say tomorrow on Feb 7th, 1981 the new number one will have the lyrics to sum up how Atlanta will feel "there is a party going on right here, a celebration to last through the year"
