Monday 4/18/1981: Oakland's Burleson wins Player of the Week award
Rick Burleson wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Rick went 14 for 31 (.452), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 15 RBI. Rick has gone 21 for 61 (.344) this season, hitting 7 taters and driving in 21 runs. He has scored 10 runs on his own. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Houston's rightfielder Joe Lefebvre had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Lefebvre helped his team with an average of .571 and 12 RBI in 21 at bats. Joe is hitting .420 this year, with 21 hits in 50 at bats. He has driven in 15 runs, slugging .680. He's 2nd in the National League in batting and 3rd in RBI!
Wednesday 4/13/1981: Steve Brye found the stroke, smashes three homers
CLEVELAND - New York (A)'s rightfielder Steve Brye flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 18-8 win over Cleveland. His 1st blast, a three-run homerun off Barry Lersch in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 398 feet from home plate. In the 4th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Manny Sarmiento. Number 3 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 403 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Overall he finished 3 for 6, scoring FOUR runs with 6 RBI. In 3694 career at bats, he has hit 219 homeruns and collected 625 RBI. Keith Hernandez was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/30/1980. The final score of the game was 18-8.
Wednesday 4/13/1981: Detroit's McGregor out for 4-5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit is without its ace Scott McGregor for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Dwight Evans in a game against Texas. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Back Muscle which will require surgery.
Tuesday 4/12/1981: Dick Tidrow pitches his 1st shutout of the season
MONTREAL - It was a great day for New York (N)'s right-hander Dick Tidrow. The 33-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Montreal on Tuesday. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Tidrow (2-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. The hitting star for New York (N) was third baseman Gary Gray, he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, and driving in 2 runs. New York (N) scored 5 runs on 14 hits.
Monday 4/11/1981: Foster (CAL) and Burroughs (STL) win P.O.W. award
California's centerfielder George Foster had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. George was on fire, hitting .433 with 5 HR and 14 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Jeff Burroughs this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 30 at bats he hit .433 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .385, Jeff hit .351 and slugged .676. He has collected 12 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Monday 4/4/1981: Fred Klages NO-HITS Atlanta
ATLANTA - Age doesn't matter. At least Philadelphia's right-hander Fred Klages shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a no-hitter against Atlanta, showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Klages (1-0) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 64 of 115 pitches for strikes. Dave Cash helped Klages at the plate, he finished 4 for 4, stroking two 2B's, scoring 2 runs. Philadelphia scored 2 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 4/3/1981: Boston's Lee out for 5 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's ace Bill F. Lee suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials.

SEATTLE - California's Tom Hall overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Seattle had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the lefty. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Hall (1-0) struck out 7 and walked 3, throwing 70 of 121 pitches for strikes. California's designated hitter Wayne Cage went 3 for 5, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hall. California scored 4 runs on 14 hits.
