Monday 4/25/1981: Player of the Week honors go to Soto and Murray
Mario Soto of Cleveland wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 5 starts this year Mario struck out 28 batters in 36 innings of work. His ERA is 1.50, his record 4-0. He has one complete game and one shutout. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Eddie Murray, San Francisco's starting first baseman. He hit .684 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.526 in 19 at bats.
Sunday 4/24/1981: Bob Reynolds pitches 2-hit shutout against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - San Francisco's right-hander Bob Reynolds is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 34th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Terry Kennedy singled with one out in the 6th inning. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Reynolds (5-1) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 85 pitches. San Francisco's first baseman Eddie Murray finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Reynolds. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Sunday 4/24/1981: Mario Soto fires NO-NO against Toronto
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Mario Soto is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Toronto on no hits. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Soto (4-0) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 64 of 108 pitches for strikes. Cleveland's rightfielder Richie Zisk finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Soto. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Friday 4/22/1981: Eddie Murray drills 5 hits
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's first baseman Eddie Murray once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up St. Louis' pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Friday. A pitch from Harry Parker in the 4th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. His 3rd hit, off Harry Parker in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. His 4th hit was a triple off Harry Parker in the 7th inning. He collected singles in the 2nd and in the 8th (two RBIs). Eddie did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 25 hits in 65 at bats, resulting in a .385 batting average. San Francisco scored 12 runs on 19 hits.
