Rob Dressler of Detroit wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.53 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Rob has a record of 5-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.38. In 45.1 Innings he was able to strike out 18 batters. He has one complete game and one shutout. He's 7th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Dennis Lewallyn. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.15 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1981: Hall (CAL) and Gullett (SFG) win monthly pitcher award
Tom Hall couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the American League thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 28 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 28 innings. His ERA in April was 0.88. Tom fired two shutouts! It's the 4th time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to San Francisco's pitcher Don Gullett. His record of 4-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 40 innings of work he allowed just 28 hits while striking out 11, compiling an ERA of just 0.90.
Sunday 5/1/1981: San Francisco's Murray named Batter of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Oakland's shortstop Rick Burleson. He had an on base percentage of .357 and hit .318, while driving in 26 runs. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Eddie Murray this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .376 with 21 RBI and slugged .763 in 93 at bats.
Saturday 4/30/1981: Bill Gogolewski blanks California with a 2-hitter
CALIFORNIA - California's bats were sleeping, and Boston's Bill Gogolewski gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. Gogolewski (1-1) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 96 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Vance Law helped Gogolewski at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, homering once. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Friday 4/29/1981: Don Hood dominates Chicago (N), gives up just 2 hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Great days are rare. But not for Los Angeles (N)'s southpaw Don Hood. Chicago (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 20th time he has done it in his career. Hood (3-2) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 102 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Leron Lee helped Hood at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Monday 4/25/1981: It's NO-NO time for Stan Bahnsen against Montreal
PITTSBURGH - With his best stuff going, Pittsburgh's Stan Bahnsen overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Montreal had no chance, getting NO hits against the right-hander. Bahnsen (1-2) fanned 8 and walked 3, throwing 104 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Pittsburgh's second baseman Terry Hughes went 2 for 3. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Bahnsen. The final score of the game was 1-0.
