The American League's best player of the week was New York (A)'s Clay Kirby, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Schmidt, Philadelphia's starting third baseman. Mike was on fire, hitting .440 with 5 HR and 12 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .375, Mike hit .264 and slugged .628. He has collected 35 runs batted in this year. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!

NEW YORK (A) - Great days are rare. But not for New York (A)'s right-hander Clay Kirby. Seattle found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. Kirby (6-3) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 121 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' The hitting star for New York (A) was first baseman Don Mattingly, he stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. New York (A) improved its record to 27-20, scoring 6 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 5/21/1981: Don Hood quiets Pittsburgh bats with shutout
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Don Hood is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Hood 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 21st shutouts in his career. With no outs in the 5th inning Harold Baines doubled to break up the no-hitter. Hood (5-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 2. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' The hitting star for Los Angeles (N) was second baseman Bill D. Doran, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with three runs scored and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 13-0.
Monday 5/16/1981: Atlanta's Jackson wins Player of the Week award
Ted Simmons wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ted pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .444 with 4 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .926. It's the 10th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's first baseman Reggie Jackson. He hit .500 with 7 RBI and slugged .917 in 24 at bats. Jackson has hit 6 bombs this year while batting .302. He adds 5 doubles, along with 25 runs scored.
Sunday 5/15/1981: Vida Blue out for 5 weeks
SAN DIEGO - When it rains, it pours. San Diego's lefty Vida Blue will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. In 8 starts this year Vida struck out 25 batters in 46.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.82, his record 2-2.
Thursday 5/12/1981: Fernando Arroyo turns in great performance against Montreal
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Fernando Arroyo is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Montreal on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Ken Szotkiewicz singled with two outs in the 5th inning. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Arroyo (5-1) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 62 of 89 pitches for strikes.
